Media Release: Leading tattoo and piercing studio set to become a cut above with new business venture

The 33rd-Andy and Robin2

A LEADING Aberdeen-based tattoo and piercing studio has invested a five-figure sum in the refurbishment of additional premises as it prepares to diversify into the world of barbering.

Rebel has renovated shop premises next door to its current studio in the city’s George Street, and formed a partnership with local barber, Andy Tough, to launch the city’s newest barber shop, The 33rd, which will officially open today (Friday 4 March).

Mr Tough, 34, who has more than 15 years management experience, trained with Alan Beak, one of the UK’s top barbers and owner of Ruger Barber in Manchester. He will use his wealth of managerial and creative experience as he works with clients to educate them about the craft of barbering and the importance of hair care.

Interiors at The 33rd have been inspired by London subways and feature a mixture of high quality barber chairs and wooden mirrors, with black and grey colour schemes throughout. The shop will start operating with two chairs, and it is anticipated that this will expand to four within the next year, bringing three new jobs to the area.

Robin Cannon, owner of Rebel, which is one of Aberdeen’s longest-running tattoo and piercing studios, made the decision to launch the new business venture as the popular trend for barbering continues across the UK.

Mr Cannon said: “2016 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Rebel. Not only is it the company’s fifth birthday in May, but we are extremely excited about diversifying in to barbering with our latest business partnership with Andy.

“The ethos behind barbering is extremely similar to tattooing and piercing. At Rebel, customer care and satisfaction is at the forefront, and our skilled team of artists and piercers work with clients to give them exactly what they want, and offer professional advice before, during and after they have tattoos or body piercings done.

“At The 33rd, Andy will offer exactly the same service through his barbering, ensuring clients experience a first-class service from the moment they walk in to the shop.”

Mr Tough, added: “I am delighted to be partnering with Rebel for this exciting new venture. Going to the barbers should be a pleasure, not a chore, and guys really should enjoy the experience and come out feeling great. For me, cutting and styling hair is a craft and I take time to speak to clients to educate them about looking after their hair and maintaining a style once I have worked with them.

“We have invested in top quality furniture and products for the shop, and will be using specially selected grooming products from Ruger Barber and Uppercut Deluxe Products, ensuring that every client’s visit to 33rd is memorable for all the right reasons.”

The official launch of The 33rd takes place on Friday 4 March, from 10am to 5pm. Guests will be treated to free cuts all day from Andy and guest barber, Deneka Greensmith, of The Stag Barber Co. in Edinburgh.
