Media Release: Lecture to explore the challenges faced by minority languages | Òraid a’ cur aghaidh ris na dùbhlain a th’ ann do mhion-chànanan

Professor Ó Giollagáin

AN expert on minority languages will present a free lecture at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig UHI next month. Conchúr Ó Giollagáin, Gaelic Research Professor at the University of the Highlands and Islands, will explore the local and global challenges faced by minority languages.

He will discuss how features of modern life are threatening the survival of minority language groups and will argue that a new approach is required to address the challenges they face.

Professor Ó Giollagáin explains: “Much of the current debate on minority language diversity is irrelevant and insincere. We need to set out a clear diagnosis of what is happening to Gaelic and to other minority languages as a first step to proposing alternative approaches to our current condition. If we are to give communities hope, we need to set out a vision and a strategy that people can believe in.”

Professor Ó Giollagáin’s inaugural professorial lecture, ‘Rethinking Our Condition: Language Minorities in Globalised Modernity’, will take place from 5.15pm to 7.15pm on Tuesday 19 April at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig UHI on Skye.

The lecture will be presented in a bilingual Gaelic/English format and facilities will be available for those wishing to hear an English interpretation of the Gaelic sections of the lecture.

The event will be filmed and will be made available shortly afterwards on a variety of platforms.

BHEIR eòlaiche air mion-chànanan òraid an asgaidh seachad aig Sabhal Mòr Ostaig UHI air an ath-mhìos. Sgrùdaidh Conchúr Ó Giollagáin, Àrd-Ollamh Rannsachaidh na Gàidhlig aig Oilthigh na Gàidhealtachd agus nan Eilean na dùbhlain ionadail is eadar-nàiseanta a th’ ann do mhion-chànanan. Bruidhnidh e mu mar a tha beatha nua-aimsireil na cunnart do mhion-chànanan agus mìnichidh e gur e fuasgladh eile air an t-suidheachadh a tha a dhìth.

Mar a tha an t-Àrd-Ollamh Ó Giollagáin a’ mìneachadh: “Tha mòran den deasbad a th’ ann an-dràsta mu iomadachd mhion-chànanan mì-fhreagarrach agus neo-threibhdhireach. Feumaidh sinn measadh soilleir air na tha a’ tachairt don Ghàidhlig agus do mhion-chànanan eile a chur a chèill mar chiad cheum ann a bhith a’ moladh fhuasglaidhean ùra air an t-suidheachadh a th’ againn an-dràsta. Ma tha sinn gu bhith a’ toirt dòchas do choimhearsnachdan, feumaidh sinn lèirsinn agus ro-innleachd a chur an cèill anns am faod misneachd a bhith aig daoine.”
Bheir an t-Àrd-Ollamh Ó Giollagáin seachad an òraid ùr-thòiseachaidh aige ‘Ath-sgrùdadh air ar Suidheachadh: Na Mion-chànanan ann an Nua-aimsireachd an t-Saoghail Mhòir’ seachad eadar 5.15f agus 7.15f Dimàirt 19 Giblean aig Sabhal Mòr Ostaig UHI san Eilean Sgitheanach. Thèid an òraid a thoirt seachad ann am measgachadh de Ghàidhlig agus Beurla agus bidh goireasan ann don fheadhainn a tha airson eadar-mhìneachadh Beurla a chluinntinn. Thèid an tachartas fhilmeadh agus bidh e ri fhaotainn goirid an dèidh làimh air farsaingeachd de làraich-lìn. Airson barrachd fiosrachaidh mun òraid, no airson àite an asgaidh a ghleidheadh, cuir post-d gu events@uhi.ac.uk no tadhal air www.uhi.ac.uk
