Media Release: International dance event at Eden Court

PublicRelationsToUse

PARTICIPANTS from Eden Court CREATIVE’s dance classes will be taking part in an international dance event later this month.

The Big Dance Pledge is a nationwide opportunity to create a dance through a connected creative process and perform simultaneously with thousands of others dancers across the world.

This year, more than 65,000 people are expected to participate across the globe.

As part of the UK-wide Big Dance programme, and to celebrate its tenth and final year, this 2016 edition is created by choreographer, Akram Khan, with an original music track by composer, Nitin Sawhney.

Using the themes of overcoming adversity and achievement, Akram is encouraging groups to tell their own stories through the choreography and come together to share their experiences in performance.

The dancers from Eden Court will be encouraged to develop their own version of the four-minute piece to suit their style, abilities and experiences, and will perform it outside the iconic building 20th May at 7pm as part of the worldwide performance.

Louise Marshall, Eden Court CREATIVE dance artist, said: “It’s so exciting for our participants to be involved in such a massive event and represent a voice from the Highlands as part of this worldwide happening. We want anyone who’s interested to come and join in the experience!”

Come along, enjoy the performance or join in yourself by learning the routine at www.bigdance.org.uk and be part of something special!

Notes to editors:

Eden Court

  • Eden Court is the largest multi-arts venue in Scotland. It re-opened in November 2007 following an extensive redevelopment programme, which saw the addition of two purpose built cinemas, a brand new flexible second theatre space and two dance and education studios.
  • Eden Court CREATIVE Arts Workers live and work in ten different areas covering the whole of the Highlands of Scotland, from Nairn to Skye, from Lochaber to Caithness. They specialise in making drama, dance and digital media activities accessible to both children and adults in the Highlands. Eden Court CREATIVE also employs two Additional Support Needs specialists, making the Arts as accessible as possible for the entire community.
  • Eden Court is the only theatre in Scotland to offer Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) courses in Drama and Dance. These are extracurricular courses, which offer pupils from across Highland the opportunity to study at Eden Court for an SQA Higher Dance, Drama or National 5 exams. Aside from Eden Court, there is only one school in the Highlands where pupils can sit SQA Higher Drama exams.
