THOUSANDS of youngsters in East Renfrewshire are being given the chance to take part in sports activities.

The Succeed in Sport initiative offers free after-school sports clubs with professional coaching, in 13 primary and secondary schools.

The programme is being run by East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure and financed with a £13,000 grant from East Renfrewshire Council.

Pupils have chosen which sports they want to play and these are as diverse as trampoline, karate, handball, gymnastics, archery, football and even ski-ing lessons.

Primary schools taking part in the programme are – St John’s, St Mark’s. St Thomas’s, Carlibar, Springhill, Auchenback, Cross Arthurlie, Neilston, Uplawmoor and Thornliebank.

Secondary schools involved are Barrhead High, Eastwood High, St Luke’s High and Woodfarm High.

Chief executive of ERCL, Anthony McReavy, said: “The opportunity to participate in sport is vital to healthy growth and development.

“Studies have shown that sports activities also support improved academic attainment.

“There’s a sport and physical activity for everyone and it’s just a case of trying as many sports as possible until you find the right one for you. And this is the opportunity we are giving thousands of young people.

“And if you get kids engaged in sport at an early age, they’re more likely to stay involved in sport when they reach adulthood.”
