Media Release: Promotions and new staff to strengthen Scottish Land & Estates’ policy team

AGKD

SCOTTISH Land & Estates is to strengthen its policy team with a number of promotions and new appointments.

With the implementation of the Land Reform Act and the aftermath of the EU referendum certain to dominate the rural agenda over the next five years, policy will be coordinated across two new portfolios: Land Use & Environment, and Business, Property & Communities.

The Land Use & Environment portfolio – which will encapsulate strategic land use issues, primary industries such as farming and forestry, natural resource management, wildlife management, conservation, protected areas and biodiversity – will be overseen by Anne Gray, who becomes become senior policy officer.

Anne has been with Scottish Land & Estates since 2007 and currently holds the environment and access remits. Anne, who holds a First Class B.Sc. Hons in Environmental Studies, comes from a farming background in the Borders and is a keen horse-rider and cyclist.

Katy Dickson, who has been with the organisation since 2014, becomes senior policy officer overseeing the Business, Property & Communities portfolio. That portfolio will lead on housing, planning, renewables, energy efficiency, business diversification, heritage, broadband, tourism, skills/education and community engagement and development.

Prior to joining Scottish Land & Estates, Katy worked as a chartered surveyor in Perth gaining experience and knowledge in a wide range of land use business activities.

The policy team will be strengthened by the appointment of two new policy officers, one covering conservation and wildlife management with the other position focusing on communities and rural development. Information on applying for these roles is available on the Scottish Land & Estates website.

Sarah-Jane Laing, Scottish Land & Estates’ director of Policy & Parliamentary Affairs, retains overall responsibility for the policy unit and will continue to lead on specific areas including land reform, agricultural holdings, community engagement, skills development, education and local government.

The new policy appointees will also continue to work closely with Dr Andrew Midgley, projects and research manager, and Jason Rust, the organisation’s legal adviser.

Douglas McAdam, chief executive of Scottish Land & Estates, said: “How Scotland’s land is used to deliver benefits for business, communities and the wider public has changed significantly over the last decade and with the added uncertainty over our future relationship with Europe, it has never been more important to develop policy that will deliver for the environment and rural Scotland in parallel.

“There is widespread acknowledgment that government, business and communities need to work in partnership to deliver further economic and social development for our rural areas and Scottish Land & Estates is committed to making sure land-businesses are equipped with the tools they need to continue their excellent work. With the correct collaborative policy, there is little doubt that we can further build momentum towards this goal over the next few years.

“Our congratulations go to Katy and Anne on their well-deserved promotions and we look forward to welcoming new members of the policy team to work with them in the near future.”
