Media Release: Innerleithen goes international

The Barra MacNeils

THE largest traditional music festival in the Borders is set to welcome international performers this month.

Canadian folk super group, The Barra MacNeils, are one of the headline acts on the Saturday at Innerleithen Music Festival, along with Scots-Norwegian collaboration, Boreas – led by fine Borders musician, Lori Watson.

Robin Dempsey, one of the festival’s organisers, said: “We’re very happy to be able to once more offer audiences a wide range of top musicians from the broadly ‘Celtic’ music world, along with many local artists and a wide range of supporting events – from the Barra MacNeils, with their special Cape Breton style, to our hugely popular ‘Rock & Roll Classics & Ballads’.”

A little nearer home, young Scottish star, Rachel Sermanni, a singer-songwriter from Carrbridge in the Highlands, is another headline act, along with the six young lads of Mànran, the exciting west coast band who took Innerleithen by storm at their last appearance back in 2012, accompanied by top musician, Kieran Halpin.

Also on the programme is the traditional sound of the Emily Smith Duo, and the Kaela Rowan Band, made up of several members of Shooglenifty.

Local Borders acts include Hawick’s Henry Douglas, Jenny Biddle, Innerleithen’s Fisher Lassies plus music schools, Nomad Beat and Merlin Music Academy, from Peebles and Melrose respectively. A special event is the ‘Fellow Travellers’ showcases of Border Ballads with both performances of the songs themselves and the stories behind the songs.

Away from the main stage at the Memorial Hall, there’s free music all weekend at ‘Live and Local’, the festival within a festival at the Vale Club plus a wide range of music, song and dance workshops.

The 14th Innerleithen Music Festival takes place 19-21 August and all the details are on www.innerleithenmusicfestival.org.
