Bird huts Appear at Intu Braehead

YOUNGSTER, Lucie Roy, was being more than a little eagle-eyed at the intu Braehead shopping mall, yesterday.

After all, a little bird had just told her The Big Birdhouse Tour had come to the shopping centre.

The seven-year old, from Erskine then bumped into mascot Maggie Macaw from Paradise Island Adventure Golf, who had flown over from Soar at intu Braehead to find out what was ruffling everyone’s feathers.

The shopping and leisure destination is working with the RSPB to host The Big Birdhouse Tour from now until September 19.

Art and nature has combined to create 15 larger-than-life birdhouses designed by celebrities including Alex Jones, from BBC’s The One Show; radio presenter, Jo Whiley; double Olympic gold medal swimmer, Becky Adlington; children’s TV presenter, Naomi Wilkinson and comedian Vic Reeves.

The tour aims to increase awareness of nature and wildlife as well as raising money for the RSPB – the UK’s largest nature conservation charity.

The Big Birdhouses are sited at various points throughout intu Braehead a part of a national tour of intu’s 15 shopping centres.

Marketing manager for intu Braehead, Christine Macdonald said: “As well as bringing a smile to everyone’s face, visitors are invited to explore and interact with the super-sized birdhouses.

“The Big Birdhouse Tour will help highlight the importance of giving nature a home and shoppers can also learn more about the RSPB and sign up as a member.

“And we hope everyone will be inspired to do something to give nature a home in their own garden, by giving wildlife a safe place to feed, breed and thrive.

“Nature lovers can even buy an RSPB nest box from our customer service desk.”

David McCall-Smith, Events Co-ordinator of the RSPB’s, Membership Development Team Scotland said: “Our partnership with intu Braehead is a superb example of reaching out to people where they are and showcasing the relevance and importance of Giving Nature a Home.

“We’re doing something really fun and creative and we hope to connect with people to inspire and encourage them to connect with nature.”
