STUDENTS at Inverness Royal Academy learned that discipline is not just confined to schooldays, at a business-focussed event in Inverness.

Business Management students from Inverness Royal Academy took part in a workshop as part of a Business Awareness Programme at the school.

Pamela Struth BA, LLB, DipLP from Empire – which has offices in Inverness, Aberdeen, London and Glasgow – explained the role of an HR manager, and in particular how to conduct a disciplinary hearing.

Ms Struth, who advises clients on HR and employment law including performance, sickness and misconduct, explained the current legal guidelines for managers and asked students to take part in a role play.

She said: “We looked at misuse of social media at work, with one case study in particular.

“Using social media in the workplace can be harmless but it can also cause problems for a business and become a serious distraction.

“Managers need to tread carefully when dealing with issues arising from social media use, and the pupils were tasked with reviewing evidence and considering whether disciplinary action was required. In groups they held mock disciplinary hearings and decided on the outcomes – from no further action to dismissal.

“It was an interesting learning experience for the youngsters – who have grown up with social media in their lives but may not realise the implications of tweeting or posting at work or even out of work.”

Catherine MacDonald who delivers the Business Awareness Programme to schools in the Highlands and Moray said: “Working in teams the students learn essential work-life skills – from problem-solving to presentation skills.”

“We appreciate the time spent by local professionals to support the business awareness programme, as it makes a huge difference to the students. HR and employment law affects every employee and so is particularly relevant to the older students.”
