Iconic brand marks the beginning of Scotland’s national newspaper and looks to the future as it debuts its search for 200 Scottish voices to bring a contemporary perspective to this landmark anniversary

THE Scotsman, Scotland’s national newspaper, today marks 200 years since the publication of its Prospectus in 1816, which set out the ambition and values of the title, ahead of its first edition, published in January 1817.

This is the beginning of a year-long round of celebration and publications that will dig deep in to the paper’s archive and see how it covered the momentous events of the past 200 years.

Today’s announcement is accompanied by a special eight-page supplement that reproduces the original article written by the paper’s founding fathers.

The paper is also set to unveil a series of events to celebrate the bicentenary of The Scotsman’s first edition next year, with more information to be revealed shortly. There will also be a BBC television documentary screening in the New Year, charting the remarkable story of how The Scotsman came to be Scotland’s national newspaper.

During the bicentenary year, The Scotsman will be showcasing the best of its history in a series of special editions, and will be looking to the future by bringing a host of new contributors to the publication from a wide range of background, reflecting the diversity of modern Scottish life.

The Scotsman will also embark on a year-long multi-platform pioneering project to bring to life the past, present and future of Scotland through the voices of 200 remarkable people who have played a major role in the nation in a series called 200 Voices.

Ian Stewart, editor of The Scotsman, said: “Today is a very significant milestone in the history of The Scotsman newspaper, and the special supplement published in today’s paper gives a taste of the history that has passed since our first edition on 25th January 1817.

“Marking the occasion with this special supplement is the perfect way to kick off celebrations, as we look forward to showcasing the best of The Scotsman’s past editions, and also begin the search for 200 new voices to bring to our pages to better reflect the vibrancy of modern Scotland.”

Today’s news follows last year’s refresh across The Scotsman’s print edition and website, which saw the launch of a new look and layout for the title, as well as the unveiling of its new fully-responsive site, built to give users a better experience on whatever device they are using.
