Media Release: Aquatic biodiversity expert to give free talk

Professor_Verspoor

AN expert in aquatic biodiversity will give a free talk in Inverness next month as part of the University of the Highlands and Islands’ public lecture series.

Professor Eric Verspoor, director of the Rivers and Lochs Institute at Inverness College UHI, will speak about his career as an evolutionary ecologist and explain his fascination with this field of biology. The talk will have a particular emphasis on fish, the focus of much of Professor Verspoor’s research.

Professor Verspoor has worked as a researcher and advisor in the field of aquatic biodiversity for over 35 years, including 22 years as a principal scientific officer to the Scottish government. He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed scientific papers, research reports and book chapters and was the lead editor of the book, ‘Atlantic salmon: genetics, conservation and management’.

Since helping to found the Rivers and Lochs Institute in 2012, Professor Verspoor has overseen the development of its research programme, postgraduate teaching and academic collaborations. His own research is focused on expanding our understanding of biodiversity in Scottish rivers.

Professor Verspoor’s talk, ‘Beneath the surface: fish and chips in rivers and lochs’, will take place from 5.30pm to 7pm on Thursday 23 March at Inverness College UHI.

Booking is essential.
