Magazine aims to raise £10,000

TWO Edinburgh College of Art graduates – Hugo Ross and James Roberts – have launched a KickStarter campaign for their biannual magazine, Vanguards.

The magazine aims to champion Scottish brands and products which Ross and Roberts admire.

Bucking the trend, they are committed to print, although Vanguards will also have a digital presence, looking to produce a high-quality product that is designed to be kept as a collector’s item.

The first issue carried features on Laurence Odie, Black Isle Brewery, Trakke and Mackintosh.

They are looking to raise £10,000 to print and commission the second issue, running until end of this month.

Ross says: “It all stemmed from meeting Laurence Odie, a wool and fabric manufacturer based in the Shetland Islands.

“The company is very successful, with 15 employees, and is an outsource manufacturer for big luxury labels and yet not known in the UK.

“We realised his story was one of many untold stories of design and manufacture in Scotland and so Vanguards magazine was created.”

Since the publication of the first issue Ross and Roberts approached Edinburgh-based editorial agency, Industry Lane, to join their team as publisher.

Industry Lane was founded by Margot Wilson (former editor of Scotland on Sunday newspaper and founding editor of The Funday Times) with a stable of leading writers, talented designers and PR expertise.

Being an admirer of print, Wilson is a perfect partnership for Vanguards.

Wilson says: “When I first came across Vanguards, I knew that it was special. I also have admired many of the brands in Scotland and I knew there would be interest both here in the UK and globally in telling these stories in a beautifully-produced magazine.

“There is an uniqueness about the style of Vanguards that perfectly matches the content. When Hugo and James asked me to join them in pushing the magazine forward I had no hesitation in agreeing.”
