A STUDENT from Kingussie has received an award which recognises the skills and qualities valued in integrated health and social care.

Shannon Murray (23) recently completed an HNC in care and administrative practice with the University of the Highlands and Islands at Inverness College UHI. She was nominated for the Ina Maciver Award for her interpersonal skills, her professionalism, her dedication to her studies and her academic performance.

The award has been established in memory of Ina Maciver, the university’s former subject network leader for health and social care, who was passionately devoted to learning, teaching and to students’ personal development. Sponsored by NHS Highland, the award is presented to a University of the Highlands and Islands’ health or social care student each year.

Shannon was nominated for the award by her lecturer, Eileen MacLennan, who explained: “Shannon is a highly-motivated student. She produced excellent academic work throughout the course and achieved an A in her graded unit.

“Shannon also demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills. She completed two placements where she participated in the provision of care for a mixed range of patients. Her mentors commended her ability and her professionalism in interacting with patients, relatives and carers.”

Shannon was presented with a trophy and a cheque for £100 by Dr Ken Oates, NHS Highlands’ deputy director of public health, at Inverness College UHI’s graduation ceremony on Friday 15 September.

Speaking about the award, Shannon said: “I cannot express how overwhelmed I am. I am unbelievably grateful to have achieved this award.

“I feel very honoured. I am very passionate about perusing a career in the health and social care sector. Since completing the course, I have gained a relief social care worker position at the Wade Centre care home. I am very much enjoying this and the responsibilities it entails.

“I am excited to be continuing my educational journey and have started my adult nursing degree at University of the Highlands and Islands.”
