Media release: What’s the best thing to put in a pie? Your teeth, say the judges of the World Championship Scotch Pie Awards 2018

ALL ‘pies’ were in Dunfermline today as Scottish butchers and bakers delivered their premier pies into the hands of the judges of the 19th World Championship Scotch Pie Awards for a long day of product perusal – a day that saw them select the World Champion Scotch Pie although the name of the winner will remain a highly-guarded secret until Tuesday 9th January, when Carol Smillie announces who has taken the top prize.

This years’ bumper crop of entries included a wide range of ‘products at their peak’ with accolades on offer for the best:

Scotch Pie

Football pies and savouries

Macaroni Pie

Steak Pie

Sausage roll

Cold savoury

Hot savoury

Vegetarian savoury

Haggis savoury

Bridie

Apple Pie

A date for your diary – the winner will be announced at a prestigious luncheon on 9th January 2018 at the Westerwood Hotel, Cumbernauld.

“Wow, I have never seen so many fantastic looking pies in one place at one time” said Craig McPhie, president of Scottish Bakers which manages the competition on behalf of The World Championship Scotch Pie Awards.

“This year’s competition is shaping up to be higher profile than ever before as we celebrate the peak of pie perfection.”

Added head judge, Ian Nelson: “And the standard is higher than ever. My panel of 50 professional judges have been impressed with the quality of the entries this year and it’s been hard to select stand-out products from a great crop of submissions but we think we have ‘risen’ to the challenge and have some worthy winners.”

The World Championship Scotch Pie Awards sees butchers and bakers across Scotland presented with the opportunity to become recognised as producing the highest quality savoury products around the globe with awards given to those producing the best products in each category.

The winner of the Scotch Pie category will be declared as the WORLD CHAMPION.

The competition, which has run for 19 years, aims to highlight that bakers and butchers create high quality artisan pastry products. Recognising the ‘great and the good’ in this way rewards excellence and raises the bar in the industry.

“The title of World Scotch Pie Champion is highly sought after and this year I am looking forward to seeing for myself some of the best products on the market today and to finding out in January who the judges pick out as having produced something that I know will be world class,” concluded Craig.
