Media release: School pupils have world schools ski champs in their sights

TWENTY young Scots skiers are preparing to head for a global ski tournament in Grenoble, France, representing Scottish schools against the best in the world.

Thanks partly to sponsorship by an Aberdeen-based company, the Scots are taking part in the upcoming Schools Winter Games, which begin on February 5.

Comprising ten girls and ten boys, the Scots team will be competing in an event due to the screened on the OlympicChannel website.

The kit – manufactured by leading makers, Rossignol – is being provided, courtesy of Mintra Group, a worldwide human resources and training specialist.

Says Gordon Ritchie, of GRM sport sponsorship: “’Mintra Group’s sponsorship is significant.

“Not only are they providing the athletes and coaches with their Alpine team clothing, but also they are providing communications support, including PR, video and photography, back from Grenoble each day during the championships.”

Added Gareth Gilbert, vice-president, Mintra Group: “Supporting developing young athletes competing on the global stage is at the core of our values. The principals of training, enhancing skills and delivering world-class performance are what we strive for. We wish the team the best of luck and are proud to have our name associated with the team.”

Scottish Schools Snowsports Association organiser, Angela Ward, continued: “Our athletes are now well-prepared. Having proper, high-quality team kit ensures that our athletes are going to Grenoble knowing they are Scotland’s best and will have the confidence to compete against the world’s best at a time when winter sports is going to be watched by millions.”

The team is aged between 13 and 18 and was selected following a rigorous process, involving points accumulated in local races this last year.

Said team member, Jonathan Marshall, from local Aberdeen school, Meldrum Academy: ”This means so much to the team. We know that, when we are competing against the Alpine nations, we are being supported by a major company who have committed to us as a team. We want to perform well against other nations and now have the confidence to do so”.
