SCOTTISH BAKER OF THE YEAR 2018 JUDGING DAY

DUNFERMLINE-based Scottish Bakers took delivery today of some 850 of the nations’ favourite morning rolls, scones, individual cakes, savouries, biscuits, breads and new category, celebration cakes, for judging.

The tasty treats were scored on appearance, freshness and taste by a panel of some 50 industry experts who whittled down the best bakes in Scotland to just one ultimate winner from each category. And the winner of each product category will now go forward to be considered for the ultimate crown – the title of Scottish Baker of the Year 2018.

The Scottish Baker of the Year Awards, which features Michelle McManus at the helm, and couture cake queen – Mich Turner MBE – as its ambassador, is the brainchild of Scottish Bakers, the trade association for bakers in Scotland who decided to search for the best baker in the land in 2012.

The competition celebrates our love of a tasty treat from our local baker and aims to crown just one hard working bakery Scottish Baker of the Year.

Scottish Bakers asked customers across Scotland to vote for their favourite bakery items in the following categories: morning roll, scone, individual cake, savoury, biscuit, bread and new category, celebration cake.

And the overall winner will be crowned Scottish Baker of the Year!

“This is my first year at the Scottish Baker of the Year Judging Day and it has been a real treat, not just for the taste buds but for the eye too,” says Scottish Bakers’ chief executive, Alasdair Smith.

“The creativity on show here today is superb, especially in our new category, celebration cake. I am intrigued to find out who the judges have awarded prizes to , and to sharing the news with the winners at our conference in Glasgow in May.”

Added Craig McPhie, president of Scottish Bakers and himself a successful baker: “This competition is based on real votes from real customers, so it really is a huge honour to get through to the judging day stage, and I wish all our entrants who have come this far well on the day.”

The winner will be announced at a glittering gala dinner at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow on Saturday 5th May 2018.
