NEVER before-seen portraits by celebrated artist and playwright, John Byrne, to go on public display for the first time this April.

Glasgow Print Studio is delighted to present 12 new and exclusive unique prints by John Byrne. The new works will go on public display for the first time at 6pm, April 5th.

Mainly self-portraits, these superb pieces showcase Byrne’s fluid draughtsmanship and his ability to underscore a raw directness with typical irony and humour. Characteristically, Byrne uses distortion and caricature to brilliant effect.

According to Byrne, his preoccupation with his own image is not about vanity: “I’m insatiably curious as to what we’re doing in this world… or, rather what I am doing in the world. I can’t think of a better or quicker way of getting to the “heart of the matter”… why we are on this earth.”

Sitting alongside the self-portraits, Byrne has chosen to include two full-length portraits of the iconic Slab Boys; characters from Byrne’s acclaimed trilogy of the same name.

As a centre of production, Glasgow Print Studio is distinctive in that the works on display were created on site – in the 2nd floor printmakers workshop. Byrne worked alongside Master Printmaker, Scott Campbell, over several months. Each piece has a screenprinted monotype underlay, which Byrne then painstakingly worked over in watercolour, ink and pencil to create twelve truly unique works.

Byrne, the revered Scottish artist and playwright, has been using the Glasgow Print Studio facilities since the 1970’s, publishing a significant and diverse body of work in print.

His work is held in major collections in Scotland and abroad, with several of his paintings hanging in The Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, the Museum of Modern Art and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. Collections abroad include amongst others, the Lobel Gallery (Sweden) and the Contemporary Arts Society, Fassler Institute (New York).
