EXCLUSIVELY for the Edinburgh TV Festival, BAFTA-winning actor, writer and presenter, Michael Palin CBE, will give a special preview of Channel 5’s forthcoming world exclusive documentary series, Michael Palin in North Korea (w/t).

The preview will be followed by an interview with television, radio and podcast presenter, Edith Bowman, it was announced today (WED).

The BAFTA-winning actor, writer and presenter will talk about his 1,300-mile journey across the DPRK, where he was the first Western broadcaster to visit many remote locations in the secretive country.

Michael met citizens from all walks of life, from capital, Pyongyang, to the snowy peaks of Mount Paektu during his visit which was two years in the planning, and coincided with the landmark summit between the North and South Korean leaders.

Michael Palin said: “My journey through North Korea was one of the most fascinating and revealing of all my travels. Many people have a view on North Korea, but very few get the chance to see what this secretive country actually looks and feels like. This was a voyage of discovery, in the best sense of the word, and I look forward to sharing my unique experiences with the audience in Edinburgh.”

Edith Bowman said: “I’ve had the pleasure of spending time with Michael over the years, he’s such a joy to spend time with. I think he’s one of the world’s most compelling story tellers, be it in comedy, acting or travelling to the far corners of the globe. He also used to be my neighbour!”

Advisory chair, Phil Edgar-Jones, said: “Having Michael Palin at the TV Festival is the icing on top of the icing on the cake. He could talk about dust and it would still make a fascinating hour, so I am baggsying a front row seat as he takes us through his North Korean adventure. I cannot wait…”

The series, produced by ITN Productions, will air on Channel 5 later in the year.

As a festival and a charity, the Edinburgh Television Festival is committed to helping young people from all backgrounds gain access to the TV Industry. It runs two young talent schemes, Ones to Watch and The Network.

Both schemes aim to ensure that the people working in television are as diverse as the audience watching it.
