NUJ Scotland now has dates for our regular day courses running in Glasgow over the next couple of months:

Law for journalists in Scotland 1 March 2019 Funded

Law for journalists is a two-year course at HND level, or a 16-week course on block release – we will attempt to cover the main points in seven hours! As a result, the tutor will concentrate on explaining the principles of the laws governing journalists and how the laws apply in the real world.

Filming and editing for iDevices 12 March 2019 £95 NUJ members

This is a one-day, hands-on course designed to introduce journalists and others to some of the principles of using iphones or ipads to shoot, edit and upload short films. Participants will shoot and capture their own material on the day and edit it into a finished film, learning how to use voice-over, still images, graphics, text and other content to enhance the appearance of the project.

Facebook introduction (½ day) 19 March 2019 £45 NUJ members

The course will cover the basics of setting up your Facebook presence and tips of how to post content.

Facebook advanced topics (½ day) 19 March 2019 £45 NUJ members

The course will cover how to get the best out of Facebook including advertising, boosted posts and their reporting and the rules around Facebook competitions.

Television news production 28 March 2019 £120 NUJ members

Only a handful of print journalists make the transition to broadcast journalism and even fewer find their way to television news desks. The purpose of this intense course is to give journalists the know-how to take a news programme from the morning conference to transmission.

Scriptwriting 4 April 2019 £95 NUJ members

This one-day course will provide a detailed introduction to writing for television drama. It will provide an outline, focus and the tools necessary for you to take your script to screen.

Feature writing 9 April 2019 £95 NUJ members

This course is for anyone who would benefit from understanding the principles and actions behind successful features. It covers writing with style for professional publications and includes sessions on building a story, structure, interviewing and pitching. Every aspect of writing outstanding features will be covered, from understanding your audience, publication and subject, to research, writing and interview skills.

PR/media awareness 12 April 2019 £95 NUJ members

A course aimed at building a coherent sense of how the news media works, how journalist and their editors make their decisions and how to maximise individual relationships with journalists. Crucial for all those wishing to improve, brush up or discover their PR skills, in particular journalists looking to move into PR and PR people looking to improve their knowledge and skill base.

Advanced social media 17 April 2019 £95 NUJ members

This is an one day, practical course, designed to enhance the journalist’s social media presence by developing skills such as searching for contacts and content, writing and distributing material via social media and the use of platforms such as HootSuite to coordinate the journalist’s social media work.

Audio recording and editing 23 April 2019 £95 NUJ members

This course will introduce students to the key concepts in capturing good-quality audio recordings in a journalism interview context. It will also cover how to import and edit these recordings using freely-available audio editing software and prepare it for use in broadcast, podcast, film, web, archive etc.

Travel writing 24 May 2019 £95 NUJ members

The course is more a nuts and bolts course rather than a ‘How to Write Travel Articles’ course.  The tutor only takes on people who can write already as he teaches how to break into travel using skills journalists have already.
