THREE Scottish brothers, who will be rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, officially launched their boat onto the much calmer waters of Loch Lomond.

The MacLean brothers – Jamie, Ewan and Lachlan, who make up team BROAR – are believed to be the first three brothers to row any ocean as they take on the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge this December.

Named the world’s toughest row, the brothers will be taking on this challenge in order to raise £250,000 for their chosen charities, Children 1st and Feedback Madagascar.

The boys are conducting a series of events to get them to the start line which included their boat launch at Ardoch this Sunday onto Loch Lomond and plan a ‘Whisky for water challenge’, where they will row the distilleries of the west coast collecting whisky to be sold to raise money for their charities.

Mary Glasgow, Children 1st chief executive, said: “We are delighted to be a charity partner for the BROAR boys’ in their inspirational and immense challenge.”

Starting in La Gomera and finishing in Antigua, the Atlantic crossing is expected to take between 40 to 60 days, through 40-foot waves, shark-infested waters and busy shipping lanes.

The brothers will be rowing day and night, repeating shifts of two hours of rowing and one hour of rest – burning around 30,000 calories per day, with likely sleep deprivation and possible hallucinations.

One solo contestant described seeing zombies crawling up his oars.

Eldest brother, Ewan, said “We are really excited to launch this campaign, the interest in our challenge has been phenomenal and to have people show up today from the US, Germany and Poland means so much to us.”

BROAR sponsors, Cairnhill Structures’ managing director, Neil Watson, said: “It has been a brilliant launch and it is really exciting to see all of the technology behind the boat. As an engineering company, we are delighted to be a part of the BROAR boys’ epic journey.”

The boys will be heading off to Chamonix’s well-known x-training school next weekend, where they will be training with one of the world’s toughest endurance athletes, Chloë Lanthier.
