Media release: Atlantic rowers undertake extreme training to prepare for ocean challenge

THREE Scottish brothers, who will be rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean this December, are preparing for their epic journey with extreme endurance training in France.

The brothers, also known as ‘team BROAR’, travelled out to Chamonix’s well-known x-training school this weekend, to be trained by elite mountain endurance athlete, Chloë Lanthier.

The Edinburgh trio pushed themselves to new heights with an intense three-day endurance programme in order to prepare themselves to take on what they describe as “the world’s toughest row”.

The weekend began with a meeting to delve into the dimensions of the training programme and outline planning strategies for what could go wrong during their challenge – followed by a 1,100 metre mountain run.

“We discussed their greatest fears of being thrown overboard and sleep deprivation and how to overcome these. I want to ensure that the boys are in control, if and when the unexpected happens,” said Chloë.

A standout part of the weekend was the 2am vertical ascent, where the boys followed the elite athlete up 1,000 metres in the dark.

Ewan, the eldest of the brothers, said: “The toughest part of the weekend was first few minutes of our initial ascent and knowing that we still had so far still to run if we were to conquer Europe’s largest peak, Mont Blanc. It was overwhelming, to say the least, but Chloë showed us proper pacing and how to increase leg oxygenation – so we felt good arriving at the top.”

He continued: “As well as the physical challenge, we learned about nutrition, fuelling and hydration strategies and how to effectively implement these. We now feel better equipped going forward with our challenge and would like to say a special thanks to GRM and Swift Morris Interiors, without whom this weekend may not have been possible.”
