IT was celebrations for enjoyleisure on Saturday night after winning the Scottish Water Learn to Swim Provider of the Year 2019 at Scottish Swimming’s annual awards night.

The Scottish Swimming Awards acknowledge and applaud the outstanding achievements of individuals in aquatics, alongside those whose work within partner organisations provides essential support for the whole aquatic community.

The Scottish Water Learn to Swim Provider of the Year Award established in 2017 recognises the effort and commitment of leisure trusts and aquatic providers in creating and delivering high-quality Learn to Swim programmes which help children become confident, competent and safer swimmers.

Three leisure trusts were shortlisted this year: North Lanarkshire Leisure, Sport Aberdeen and enjoyleisure in East Lothian, with enjoyleisure scooping the top prize on Saturday at the awards ceremony.

enjoyleisure have been delivering the new National Learn to Swim Framework in partnership with Scottish Swimming and Scottish Water for the last few years and the programme has gone from strength to strength during this period.

The East Lothian-based leisure trust has introduced a number of initiatives recently to enhance the programme including opportunities for children who do not manage to meet the minimum school swimming standard; lessons that support children with additional support needs to ensure swimming lessons are inclusive; and the introduction of new digital software to improve parent communications and efficiency for swimming teachers across all sites.

enjoyleisure delivers the full learn-to-swim pathway, from early years to club-ready. They provide a variety of opportunities depending on the children’s ambitions including seamless links to aquatics clubs across East Lothian. There is also a comprehensive adult swimming programme which supports adults to become more confident in the water and provides opportunities to stay physically active.

Speaking on behalf of the trust, Karen Ferguson, Swimming Development manager, commented: “We are delighted to win the Scottish Water Learn to Swim Provider Award particularly with all of the recent changes we have gone through – it is a great reward and recognition for the hard work and dedication of all of our teachers, aquatic co-ordinators and support staff without whom we would not be able to run such a fantastic programme.”

Euan Lowe, CEO of Scottish Swimming, commented: “It’s great to see the commitment and efforts of our partner Leisure Trusts and aquatic providers being recognised in this way. The National Learn to Swim Framework in partnership with Scottish Water has grown significantly over the last three years which is down to the fantastic work of swimming teachers and programme managers across Scotland to help children become confident and competent swimmers while having fun at the same time.

“Well done to all of the finalists within this award category and congratulations to enjoyleisure and all their staff who have contributed to making their Learn to Swim programme a huge success.”

Brian Lironi, director of Corporate Affairs at Scottish Water, commented: “We’d like to congratulate enjoyleisure on receiving this award, recognising their commitment to helping children in East Lothian become confident, competent and safer swimmers.

“We are proud to support the Learn to Swim programme as it equips children across Scotland with the skills and knowledge that will help them to be safer in the water – whether at their local pool, at the beach on holiday or even just out and about around Scotland’s miles of coastline, rivers and lochs.”

Scottish Swimming’s National Learn to Swim Framework in partnership with Scottish Water is delivered by aquatic providers across Scotland from Shetland to Dumfries and from Aberdeen to the Western Isles, teaching over 78,000 children how to be confident swimmers.
