gaelic

Deadline for applications: 5pm on Friday 31 January 2020

CREATIVE Scotland today (Tuesday 17 December) invites applications from fluent Gaelic speakers interested in developing careers in arts criticism, to join a new mentoring scheme.

The Gaelic Critics Mentoring Programme will offer three aspiring Gaelic-fluent writers the opportunity to respond to work presented in the language across artforms including literature, performance and music.

The scheme aims to enrich Scotland’s pool of reviewers and critics working in the Gaelic language by equipping them with the skills, and providing opportunities to pitch work to editors to be commissioned by publications and broadcasters.

The programme will offer free mentorship from experts Mark Wringe (Senior Lecturer at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, arts critic and BBC broadcaster) and award-winning poet, critic and journalist Pàdraig MacAoidh/Peter Mackay.

In addition, through practical sessions with Claire Sawers (freelance arts journalist) the three mentees will develop key critical writing skills and advice and insight into freelance working practice.

Alan Bett, Literature officer at Creative Scotland, said: “Creative Scotland is proud to announce this new programme, aimed at enriching Scotland’s pool of arts reviewers working in the Gaelic language. Professional criticism is vital in strengthening the work of artists and introducing it to wider audiences. Through this bespoke mentoring scheme, emergent critics fluent in Scottish Gaelic will be provided with the skills and platform to develop their careers, diversifying the range of voices responding to Gaelic language arts in Scotland.”

The programme includes a small bursary and an expenses allocation.

Applications close at 5pm on Friday 31 January 2020.
