Media release: My Weekly celebrates its 110th anniversary by sharing birthday joy with readers in isolation

My Weekly 110th Birthday (c) DC Thomson & Co. Ltd 2020

EXACTLY 110 years ago this month, My Weekly magazine published for the very first time and has been loved by generations of women ever since.

The magazine has consistently acted as a feel-good pick me up for women all over the United Kingdom, and, throughout the current coronavirus crisis, it aims to do just the same.

While the magazine’s birthday celebrations have had to be scaled back due to the pandemic, My Weekly is determined not to let the current situation dampen the birthdays of their readers. Birthdays aren’t cancelled, and My Weekly want to give an extra special boost to readers who may be celebrating them in lockdown.

As part of the refreshed birthday plans, My Weekly is calling on readers and their loved ones to nominate anyone who deserves a special birthday treat from the magazine – the chance to appear on the cover of their very own digital issue, which can be sent to them via My Weekly’s social media channels. Those featured will also have the chance to win My Weekly gift hampers.

The magazine has already kicked-off proceedings by sending a special My Weekly gift hamper to Jessie Sinclair, of Perth, who is also celebrating her 110th birthday this week – direct to her care home as a treat!

Editor of My Weekly, Stuart Johnstone, said: “My Weekly has survived two world wars as well as various social and economic challenges, and here we are, still producing our top-class magazine in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, reaching our readers who now more than ever need a feel good read.

“At My Weekly, we’ve always put our readers at the heart of everything we do. Their zest for life motivates us and, while we aren’t celebrating our birthday as we originally planned, we still want to give something back and celebrate hand in hand with anyone else experiencing a birthday at this time.”

My Weekly has been at the forefront of the women’s weekly magazine market since it was first published 110 years ago. Esteemed writers such as Sylvia Plath, James Heriot and Carla Lane have all had words published in the magazine, which, at its sales peak, sold over one million copies. Its mixture of warm-hearted advice, fiction and lifestyle continues to strike a chord today, and it is one of the key titles in DC Thomson Media’s portfolio.

The My Weekly team are still hard at work producing the magazine, and have just unveiled a bumper issue, which looks back over the magazine’s long history, as well as providing the usual mix of entertainment and advice.

Readers can get in touch with My Weekly using the hashtag, #MyWeeklyCelebrate, to share how they plan on marking their birthdays, and for loved ones to nominate someone who deserves to be part of celebrations too – putting a spotlight on those who should be made to feel special.

The team have also launched a special My Weekly birthday gift for readers: a My
Weekly subscription deal with audiences able to purchase their first 13 issues for £4 – the perfect birthday gift or anyone looking for a lift while we are all social distancing!

Anyone who is experiencing a birthday in April, or who has a loved one who is, can get in touch by:

1. Nominating someone celebrating their birthday in April who deserves a special boost – tell us why using #MyWeeklyCelebrate via My Weekly’s socials or contacting myweeklyeditor@dctmedia.co.uk for their chance to get their own My Weekly cover.

2. Tell us how you are celebrating your birthday in lockdown via My Weekly’s socials or contacting myweeklyeditor@dctmedia.co.uk for the chance to win a My Weekly birthday gift.
