NOT even a pandemic will stop an award-winning dance company from dancing and, to quote from Cliff Richard and The Shadows: ‘Put on your dancing shoes… Dance a way your blues’.

Indepen-dance is an inclusive dance company for disabled and non-disabled people to enjoy, express and fulfil their potential through dance.

Following on from the success of the company’s #proudmary dance event a few weeks ago, in recognition of the great work of all the amazing NHS staff and key workers, over 200 people danced in their living rooms, their gardens and included a whole street taking to dancing along to Tina Turner’s 1970s hit, Proud Mary.

Subsequently, a further 3,400 people have gone online to view #proudmary on Facebook and YouTube.

By popular demand, Indepen-dance is asking you to do it all over again this Friday when dance teacher, Wils McAslan, once again invites everyone to get up and dance with him for Friday Fiesta LIVE on Indepen-dance’s Facebook and Youtube channels.

As well as live dance events such as #proudmary, the company has been providing a series of FREE weekly online classes for many of its members who are already often socially isolated.

Human interaction and sharing in a dance activity has been really beneficial to many of its disabled participants. As well as providing a structured dance activity that encourages the participants to get moving, it promotes and increases physical fitness and improves their general wellbeing. In addition to dancing, the company has added in a coffee morning to allow people to socialise and talk to each other.

Indepen-dance is also adding an extra class to its programme from Monday 18 May at 3pm with guest tutors from around the world.

Over the next few weeks, various dancers and choreographers will be asked to lead classes for people of all ages. Already announced is Dr Jenny Elliot, CEO of Artscare in Belfast and Eve Mutso – former principal ballet dancer with Scottish Ballet. This allows an opportunity to connect with international and UK dancers and choreographers to share their dance style online for participants.
