Media release: Dynamic Earth welcomes additional Scottish Government funding

DYNAMIC Earth has received a funding award, with the announcement of the Scottish Government support for Scotland’s science centres.

The funding will help support Dynamic Earth to re-open this autumn in time for October half-term, following a significant loss of income over the summer period, during what would have been the busiest time of the year for the charity.

The announcement of the grant from the Science Minister, Richard Lochhead, has also confirmed the contribution played by the science centres towards STEM learning and science research, some of which the team at the centre has been able to continue while closed.

John Simpson, CEO at Dynamic Earth, comments: “We are delighted to receive this support from the Scottish Government and also to receive recognition for the role our team plays in essential science learning.

“Our aim in the coming months will be to support the return of schools after the summer break and to help teachers and pupils catch up for lost time as a result of Covid-19. The importance and relevance of science to our everyday lives has never been more important and the Scottish Science Centre Network can play a significant part in engaging both young and old in science matters.

“We are now very much looking forward to reopening in the autumn. The four science centres are a hugely valuable national public asset and we are all keen to play our part as we come out of this global crisis.”

Once re-open, Dynamic Earth will be able to continue with plans for the relaunch of its refurbished Showdome as a fully interactive planetarium. Harnessing the latest astronomical and satellite data, visitors will be able to travel into space and around the universe immersed in a 360-degree experience and explore our planet like never before.
