BROADCASTER, STV, and gender equality organisation, Pass the Mic, today announce a partnership aimed at increasing the number of expert women of colour appearing across the media.
Pass the Mic has created a list of women from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups who are experts in their field – educators, academics, researchers, campaigners, policy makers, community activists, writers, workers and carers – and many more. This list is available to media organisations and events planners seeking to include women of colour on their programming or on interview panels, to help address the issue of under-representation.
As media partner, STV commits to the following:
* Members of the editorial team on flagship news programme, STV News at Six, and the current affairs programme, Scotland Tonight, will conduct virtual training sessions on media interview and presentation skills for up to 30 women at a time.
* STV mentors will provide more in-depth, practical training and skills development initially for four women, as well as supporting them in the development of a written article, long form interview or recorded piece related to their experience.
* STV’s head of News will commission 12 first-person essays from Pass the Mic members, which will run on a dedicated separate section of the STV website until spring 2021. Once published, these columns will then be available to other outlets to use.

We’re proud to be partnering with Pass the Mic and look forward to working with these women to hone their interview skills and help develop their confidence and experience in dealing with media, to ensure that their voices are heard.”

STV also works with Women in Journalism on their ’50:50′ initiative, which sees the broadcaster providing practical training for women contributors to equip them with media interview skills.
