ScottishSchoolSailing-2022-PressRelease

IN 1959, Jack Brown, the Commodore of Loch Earn Sailing Club, put up a trophy for a sailing event for local schools and the Brown Cup was born.

LESC is extremely proud that, 63 years later, the event is still running and has grown into the Brown Cup Scottish Schools’ Championships.

The last two years had to be cancelled as we all came to terms with the Covid pandemic.

But in 2022 – with a new website, sponsor and catering team in place – we are delighted to be back and extremely proud of what was achieved.

This year’s event commenced with a two-day training weekend for around 34 boats.

The training is geared for less experienced sailors, some of whom are competing at a regatta for their first time. The aim of the weekend is to prepare them for the Brown Cup event held on Monday.

As in previous years, the coaching staff hold RYA certification and are made up of ex-Brown Cup competitors.

Despite the gale-force winds, the coaches managed a day of onshore coaching on Saturday followed by some superb strong wind sailing for all on Sunday.

A cafe was run throughout the three days with evening meals served in the clubhouse on Saturday and Sunday evenings. The catering was a huge success; well done to all involved.

Monday morning saw a further 28 competitors register for race day, resulting in a fleet of 62 boats representing schools throughout Scotland.

Thankfully, the weather conditions eased for Monday with 15mph winds from West South-West. The race team ran two excellent races before a 20 mph + squall came through resulting at the end of racing for the day.

The Brown Cup is awarded to the top team of three boats, The races are sailed in three fleets, Optimist, Topper, and General handicap. This year we had ten Optimists, 29 Toppers and 23 General handicap boats, and four Primary School sailors.

Fourteen school teams competed for the Brown Cup.

A huge congratulations to the High School of Dundee, who retained the Brown Cup which they won in 2019, the last year the event was sailed.

Brown Cup:

1st High School of Dundee: Suzie Sturrock, Scott Xu, James and Rory Gifford.

2nd Lomond High School: A. Eilidh McQueen, Andrew Perratt, Logan Brown.

3rd St Leonards High Schoo:l B. Oscar Morris, Madeleine Fleetham, Thomas Loosley.

Top Primary School competitor:

2nd Milngavie Primary: Rohan O’Kane.

A massive thank you to our sponsor, Optos, who is providing sponsorship for the next three years. All competitors were given a branded race bib as part of their entry.

LESC and Optos look forward to welcoming you all back for the 64th year in 2023.
