Media release: Mercado Spanish bar and restaurant opens in Merchant Square

MERCADO, a new Spanish tapas bar and restaurant specialising in Piri Piri chicken, has opened in Merchant Square in the heart of Glasgow’s historic Merchant City.

Inside, a stylish contemporary Spanish bar offers an extensive range of Spanish beers, cava and wine whilst its restaurant in the courtyard of Merchant Square offers a selection of tasty tapas.

Says a spokesperson: “The concept is to introduce some authentic Spanish cuisine and culture into the cosmopolitan Merchant Square. Mercado style bar and courtyard restaurant are designed to cater for couples, families and friends looking for an appealing venue to catch up over a meal and a few drinks – and its Piri Piri chicken speciality adds an exotic new flavour to Glasgow’s vibrant dining scene.”

Mercado’s speciality is fresh chicken marinated for 24 hours in a Piri Piri sauce then flame grilled to order in either a mojo (hot) or verde (cool green) spice. Lunchtime offers include three tapas dishes at £6.95.

Located on Candleriggs at the heart of the Merchant City, Glasgow’s cultural, fashion and food quarter, Merchant Square offers an eclectic selection of restaurants and cafes.

Once part of the old Glasgow Fruit Market, Merchant Square is imbued with the history of the area’s dominating Victorian architecture, although today this sense of history blends seamlessly with the distinctly cosmopolitan ambiance that pervades the surrounding cobbled streets that bring the outside in.
