A SURGE in tourists from America is predicted following the overwhelming response to a competition on American radio to win a trip to Scotland.

Fish Out of Water, a leading bespoke tour company for business and leisure trips, sponsored the competition to win an eight day luxury trip to Scotland, including two return business class flights, accommodation in top Scottish hotels from Edinburgh and Glasgow to the Scottish Highlands and Islands – but it was totally unprepared for the response.

Ann Medlock, founder of Fish Out of Water, said: “The competition was broadcast on Fiona Ritchie’s NPR radio programme The Thistle & Shamrock, but while the station had predicted around 1500 entries at best, it was shocked by the deluge of 7,000 entries – from every state throughout America!

“And already we’re experiencing an upsurge in enquiries from America requesting that we arrange exclusive itineraries on behalf of individuals, families and corporates.”

Produced from a studio in Dunkeld, NPR’s The Thistle & Shamrock broadcasts music from Celtic roots and beyond to public radio listeners via over 340 stations throughout the USA.

The winner of Fish Out of Water’s competition was Pablo Valcarcel, a Greenville, South Carolina resident, who will be visiting Scotland this summer with his girlfriend. A regular listener to public radio station WEPR 90.1 Greenville, Valcarcel heard the competition while listening to The Thistle & Shamrock in his car.

Radio host, Fiona Ritchie, said: “It’s exciting finally to have our winners for this trip of a lifetime. Pablo and his girlfriend are going to have an amazing experience staying in award-winning hotels, eating in Michelin-star restaurants, taking in the scenery and even making a kilt with the royal family’s kilt-maker! I’m looking forward to meeting them.”

Fish out of Water provides its clients with a dedicated service to find them the right activity and create a bespoke travel package around it. The best Scotland has to offer business and leisure visitors is showcased on its online directory at www.fishoutofwater.net
