Media Release: National recognition for George Watson’s artists

A CALENDAR celebrating excellence in art and design features artwork from two Watson’s pupils, Catriona Gibb and James Byers (both in S5).

The calendar by the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA) is the largest examination board in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

In total, the calendar shows the work of 27 pupils from throughout the United Kingdom, taken from all the examination portfolio work presented to the AQA. Watson’s was the only Scottish School represented.

The Art School at Watson’s offers GCSE, AS and A Levels in art as the school believes that these courses give pupils the opportunity to develop highly personal in-depth work, which often extends beyond the boundaries of the syllabus.

Catriona’s ceramic sculpture, ‘Self Portrait – Inner and Outer’, presented as part of her GCSE Art and Design portfolio last year features on the May page.

This piece was described as “perceptive, considered and innovative” by her teacher.

James’ cubist representation of the Forth Bridge, features in August. It was part of his portfolio which was presented for his GCSE Art and Design (Fine Art).

Gareth Edwards, principal, said: “It is fabulous to see the talents of our pupils recognised at such a high level, especially when up against the artistic talents of all pupils studying for these qualifications. It is also fitting that our Art School, which is highly regarded and has developed pupils over the years to maintain consistently high standards, gains the recognition that I believe it so richly deserves.”
