Media Release: A cottage in the country with room to roam

A COTTAGE in the country for the price of a flat in the city, and two acres of some of the most dramatic scenery in Britain – that is the remarkable package on offer by DMH Baird Lumsden at Springfield Cottage, a delightful home for sale at Bothkennar, by Falkirk.

The land at Bothkennar, near the tidal estuary of the Forth, is low and sweeping. It brings to mind Philip Larkin’s tribute to the flat Lincolnshire countryside, in The Whitsun Weddings… “Thence, The river’s level drifting breadth began, Where sky and Lincolnshire and water meet.”

Only, unlike Lincolnshire, Springfield’s looks out onto Scotland’s royal river as it flows towards the great Forth bridges. To the east, is the ancient kingdom of Fife and to the north, past the Art Deco solidity of the Kincardine bridge, the foothills of the Highlands fade into blue and grey.

Number two Springfield Cottages is a spacious semi-detached farm cottage which would be ideal for equestrian buyers, with approximately two acres, or 0.81 hectares, of level land which could be put to grass.

The house comprises a hall, lounge/dining room, kitchen, utility, shower room, three bedrooms, and bathroom. It has oil central heating, partial double glazing, a double garage and mature gardens. Although the cottage requires internal modernisation it has a particularly attractive rural setting and fine open views. Additional land may be made available by separate negotiation.

The cottage is only a mile from Skinflats, a village in the Falkirk Council area, situated to the east of Carronshore and north of the River Carron. Skinflats was named by Dutch engineers brought to Scotland to reclaim land in the 18th century. They dubbed their achievement “beautiful plains”, the Dutch words being corrupted to create a name that has been described as the ugliest in Scotland.

Regardless of the name, the wildlife is some of the most prolific in Scotland. The estuary of is internationally renowned for birdlife and the shores are an excellent spot for finding wintering wildfowl and waders. Thousands of pink-footed geese can be seen (and heard!) coming in to roost on winter evenings.

The surrounding countryside has recognised hacking routes, beautiful walks and is close to excellent golf courses. It is only five miles from comprehensive shopping facilities in Falkirk and a short drive – 22 miles – to all the attractions of Edinburgh.
