Media Release: Careers convention in Orkney

THE biggest careers convention ever staged in Orkney will be held at the Pickaquoy Centre early next month.

Preparations are well advanced for the event, where well over 60 exhibitors will provide a wealth of advice and information for people from throughout the islands.

“The convention is for anyone, of any age, who’s interested in education, learning, training and employment,” said Joyce Slater, from Careers Scotland.

“It’s for unemployed people, job changers and those wishing to develop within their current job.”

Many hundreds of school pupils are expected to visit the convention for help and inspiration as they plan their future careers.

The event will also enable parents and carers to support their children’s careers planning.

The Orkney All Age Careers Convention 2007 is funded by HIE Orkney and organised by Careers Scotland in association with UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, and HELOA, the Higher Education Liaison Officers’ Association.

“This is by far the biggest careers convention to be held in Orkney,” Joyce said.

“We’ve responded to feedback from the last event and increased the number of exhibitors from 46 to 66.

“We’re delighted that a huge number of employers have agreed to take part – making the convention a great way to find out about a wide range of career opportunities across the islands.”

Also on hand will be colleges, universities and training providers, as well as organisations providing advice on everything from volunteering to funding for courses.

HIE Orkney’s staff will be there to talk about Skillseekers and Modern Apprenticeship opportunities – and offer advice to people interested in setting up their own businesses.

Ahead of the event, pupils at Stromness Academy, Kirkwall Grammar School and the junior high schools in Westray, Sanday and Stronsay are being provided with a special booklet.

The Careers Scotland team will also be visiting schools to talk to the young people who will be visiting the convention.

“The convention has a big role to play in helping them plan for the future – and we want to give them every opportunity make the very most of it,” Joyce said.

With that in mind, there will be a special evening session at the convention – giving pupils the chance to return with friends or parents to pick up additional advice or information from the exhibitors.

“The whole convention is open to everyone,” she added. “It takes place once every two years and, as the biggest so far, it’s an opportunity few in the community can afford to miss.”

The Orkney All Age Careers Convention 2007 takes place at the Pickaquoy Centre on Tuesday, October 2, with sessions running from 11am to 3pm and from 5pm to 7pm.
