Media Release: New building for Slateford practice

A NEW medical centre built in the Slateford area of Edinburgh will be officially
opened on Wednesday 28th March, between 12:00 and 13:00pm.

The centre has brought
together Slateford Medical Practice and NHS Lothian community services into one
facility.

Andy Kerr MSP, Minister for Health and Community Care, will unveil a plaque to
formally open the Slateford Medical Centre.

The centre will accommodate the six GPs from the medical practice, as well as NHS
community services – district nurses, health visitors, midwives, physiotherapists,
school nurses and podiatrists.

The facility was built using the third-party private developer scheme, where the
practice agrees to rent the property, built to its and NHS Lothian’s specifications,
from a specialised primary care developer for a period of 25 years. This is funded
from the General Medical Services Rent and Rates Scheme.

The practice, which currently serves 6,600 patients, now has use of a dedicated
minor operations suite and individual rooms for the two nurse practitioners, as well
as for visiting psychologists and psychiatric nurses, dieticians and other visiting
clinicians. There are also has modern suites for physiotherapists, podiatrists and
midwives and rooms to host patient groups and classes.

The building was completed and handed over at the end of January and opened to
patients on Monday 12 February.

Bob Anderson, interim chair, NHS Lothian said: said: “It is exciting to see the new
building open. We look forward to seeing the benefits of services previously
provided in a separate environment, brought together under one roof.”

Andy Kerr, Minister for Health and Community Care, said: “The Slateford Medical
Centre highlights the shift we’re making across Scotland in the way we deliver
healthcare. People want more services closer to home. This new facility brings a
wide range of healthcare staff under one roof, allowing NHS Lothian to deliver that
care on people’s doorstep. I’ve no doubt it will provide a first-class
service to this popular and growing part of Edinburgh.”

Dr Fraser Wells, one of the GPs at the practice, said: “We are delighted with the
new premises. The new environment has been received positively by all practice and
trust staff and will improve patient care for many years to come.”
