Media Release: Dental nurses celebrate training success

LEAD tutor for Dental Care Professionals, NHS Education for Scotland (NES), Teresa
Ross, said: “The Dental Nurses have completed their Scottish Vocational
Qualification/ Modern Apprenticeship in Dental Nursing, travelling from all parts of
the Highlands and Skye to attend training sessions. NES worked in partnership with
Inverness College to deliver these sessions at the Dental Postgraduate Centre at the
Raigmore Hospital as well as evening sessions in Oban for nine of our candidates.

“This year, the NES Dental Directory has introduced a Candidate of the Year Award
for the SVQ course. We asked SVQ assessors to nominate candidates based on their
motivation, organisation and nursing skills and a completed portfolio of evidence
from each candidate was also judged.

“We are delighted to announce that Elizabeth Corcoran is our very first winner.
Elizabeth has set a very high standard to follow – her nomination form spoke of her
ability to interact well with patients and that she is quick to learn and not afraid
to ask for advice and help when required. Her evidence portfolio clearly stood
out.”

Elizabeth said: “It’s great news to receive the award and be recognised as Candidate
of the Year. Working on the portfolio was quite time consuming and it required a lot
of organisation – which thankfully I’m good at!

“Overall, it was a thoroughly
enjoyable course to do, with the daily opportunity to gain experience, demonstrate
it in the SVQ folder and gain a worthwhile high-level qualification.

“I thank the Dental Directory for the award but most of all my colleagues in Portree
High School Community Dental Clinic for their support and encouragement.”
