Media Release: Inverness medical company scoops top award

AN Inverness company whose pioneering system looks set to speed up the diagnosis and treatment of heart patients has scooped a top award at this year’s Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI) annual dinner and business excellence awards.

DanMedical won the award for excellence in research and innovation sponsored by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) at a gala dinner and ceremony at the Newton Hotel, Nairn on Friday, September 19.

The event showcases the achievements of companies in the Highlands and Islands in a wide range of sectors to an audience drawn from businesses sectors across the UK.

DanMedical has developed a state-of–the-art computer-based system allowing GPs to record a patient’s blood pressure, lung function and electrocardiogram (ECG) readings, which measure the electrical activity of the heart, onto a PC.

The information can be fed straight to the Cardiac Care Unit at Raigmore Hospital via the Internet.

GPs have traditionally recorded the data by hand and then used a fax machine to send the information resulting in an often poor quality ECG report.

Known as the DanMedical Analysis System (D-MAS), it has been developed using software designed by the University of Glasgow and is now being piloted in GP surgeries across the Highlands and Islands.

The first systems are being used at Culloden Medical Practice and in Portree and could prove especially effective for remote, rural GP practices.

DanMedical also worked with the Highland Heartbeat Centre and the Cardiac Care Unit at Raigmore to develop the system.
