Media Release: Glasvegas and Friendly Fires lead the way as sales of Mercury-shortlisted albums double

HMV has tracked sales of the 12 albums shortlisted for this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize, comparing public demand at its stores (High Street, online and digital) over the past fortnight (following the announcement of the Albums of the Year on 21st July) with the two-week period prior to this.

As ever, there has been a substantial increase in demand for all the shortlisted albums, with sales across the board more than doubling (107 per cent) at HMV to again underline the impact of the prize in shining a light on UK and Irish music.

Whilst all the artists have benefited to some degree, the most pronounced lift in sales has been for critically-acclaimed albums by the likes of Glasvegas and Friendly Fires, which the music-buying public has been encouraged to revisit.
