Media Release: Delivering sustainable growth for Scotland’s islands

SECURING a sustainable future for Scotland’s islands is the topic of a major speech to be delivered by Highlands and Islands Enterprise chairman William Roe at a conference in Inverness on Friday September 25th.

He will outline HIE’s vision of the area’s future and the steps that are being taken to secure it to an audience of national and international experts at the two day event entitled Sustainable Islands – Towards a Low Carbon Economy.

The event is organised by CIFAL Findhorn in association with Highland Council, United Nations Institute of Training and Research, Highlands & Islands Enterprise, UHI Millennium Institute, Community Energy Scotland and Forestry Commission Scotland. A range of speakers from several countries will explore the impact small islands are likely to experience when faced with variable weather and the rising sea levels associated with climate change.

Mr Roe said: “I’m delighted this conference is taking place in the Highlands and Islands. Sustainability is a topic which is both vital to the future of our islands and central to the vision which drives Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

“The threat from climate change and the need to create a sustainable future are issues which touch the lives of everyone. Today’s gathering is an important opportunity to exchange information, knowledge and experience from many countries, and I am grateful to CIFAL for arranging this opportunity.”

Sustainable Islands – Towards a Low Carbon economy takes place at Highland Council Chambers in Inverness on September 25th and will be followed by linked field trips to Orkney and Skye on September 26th.
