Media Release: Swap brussels for mussels

ON the 25th of December, diets are forgotten and calorie counting goes out the window.

A cooked breakfast followed by a massive Christmas lunch with chips, dips, chocolates and alcohol in between means that, on average, an adult can consume a massive 6,000 calories over the course of the day – up to three times as much as the recommended daily allowance of 2,000 for women and over twice as much as the RDA of 2,500 for men.

The majority of the calories are consumed during the main meal of the day where most of the ingredients are jam-packed with calories.

Seafood and shellfish, on the other hand, have a very low fat and calorie content, so this Christmas why not substitute the traditional turkey dinner for a low-calorie seafood spread, courtesy of the Isle of Skye Smokehouse?

The prawn marie rose and iceberg lettuce starter can be replaced with hand sliced smoked salmon and gravadlax. Instead of roast turkey, feast on crayfish and delicious smoked and unsmoked langoustines. Swap brussels for mussels and trade ‘pigs in blankets’ for ‘angels on horseback’ (oysters wrapped in streaky bacon seasoned with salt and pepper and served in their shells). Creating a meal that will tantalise your taste buds without expanding your waistband.

Seafood specialists, the Isle of Skye Smokehouse, offer a Fisherman’s Feast hamper on www.skye-seafood.com, which includes all of the above treats and a few additional delights. Indulge yourself and all the family with the hamper boasting the Smokehouse’s renowned smoked salmon, mussels, fresh cooked whole langoustines, crayfish and oysters – plus their unique gravadlax, kippers and pate. The seafood bounty can be delivered to any UK address normally within 24 hours and comes in a beautiful wicker hamper.
