Media Release: On your marks for the Great Pyjamas Caper

GET the kids into their pyjamas for the first ever Great Pyjamas Caper in aid of the new pyjamas campaign for the new Sick Kids hospital.

For the first time, the Edinburgh New Year’s Day Triathlon will give kids, from eight to 15, the opportunity to run the one kilometre course of the Great Pyjamas Caper – in their pyjamas.

Half of the £10 entry fee will go to the new pyjamas campaign to help make the new Sick Kids hospital in Edinburgh one of the best in the world.

Up to 1,000 children and young people are expected to take part in the Great Pyjamas Caper – babies and toddlers in pushchairs included, as long as the parent is in their pyjamas too.

The Great Pyjamas Caper will be run at 11am on 1 January 2010, immediately before Edinburgh’s traditional New Year hangover remedy – the New Year’s Day Triathlon.

Runners in the Triathlon will also have an opportunity to donate to the new pyjamas campaign when they register for the race.

The 1,000 metres course of the Great Pyjamas Caper will begin in Holyrood Road, leading runners into Holyrood Park and back to the finishing line at Dynamic Earth. Those who take part will be given a new pyjamas medal in recognition of their achievement.

Elaine McGonigle, director of the new pyjamas campaign, says: ‘We are very grateful to Edinburgh Racing, the organisers of Edinburgh’s New Year’s Day Triathlon, for giving us the opportunity to raise funds with the Great Pyjamas Caper and the Triathlon.

‘The imagination of children and young people will be fired by this event – we have already seen children going to school in their pyjamas to raise funds for the campaign. It’s good to make fundraising fun for them and, in this case, the spectators too.’

Notes for editors

The new organisers of Edinburgh’s New Year’s Day Triathlon, Edinburgh Racing – the team who organised the European Duathlon championships in 2007 – have teamed up with the Triathlon section of the Edinburgh Road Club (Edinburgh’s biggest cycling and triathlon club) to prevent the Triathlon being lost from the calendar during the years of the Royal Commonwealth Pool closure.
