Media Release: Shelter Scotland response to Scottish Government housing stats

RESPONDING to Scottish Government figures, showing the number of affordable rented homes build in Scotland (1), Graeme Brown, director of Shelter Scotland, housing and homelessness charity, said: “These new build figures announced today (Friday) are welcome but overall, they are just a ‘drop in the ocean’ compared to the numbers of homes we require to meet unmet and future need in Scotland.”

He added: “The Minister is right to point to accelerated funding being a key factor in a rise in the number of affordable rented homes being built. But what happens next year when the budget for housing drops significantly because of this accelerated funding? (2)

“We must see an increase in money for affordable rented housing in the draft budget currently going through Parliament if we are not to see a drop off in house building next year, leaving hundreds of thousands of people in Scotland with little hope of having a home of their own anytime soon.”
