Media Release: Moray Firth Radio scoops top gong

INVERNESS-based radio station, MFR, has been awarded local ‘Station of the Year’ for Scotland in the 2009 Radio Academy awards.

The local commercial station, which covers the largest geographical area in mainland UK and includes the Highlands, Moray and parts of Aberdeenshire, has won the award three out of the last four years.

Moray Firth Radio’s entry earned praise from the judges, who said: “The station is at the heart of the community, covering relevant local content from the highs of Christmas to the lows of their premier league football team’s relegation.

“A main focal point for the area is when the weather takes a takes a turn for the worse in the North of Scotland and clearly touches all aspects of life in a very large TSA.

“MFR is a station that has a family feel, developing its own talent from the very community it serves. A well deserved winner.”

The award means that MFR, currently UK mainland’s no.1 local station (Rajar Sep 2009), will now go forward to the national round when the shortlist will be announced for the Sony Radio Awards, in April at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.

Danny Gallagher, managing director at MFR, said: “I’m delighted MFR has been recognised as a high achiever from our peers in the radio industry. My guys are consistently at the top of their game. The way we engage with our listeners, whom we love dearly, is always a priority. Our entertaining and informative output delivered in our own up-beat style also had a part to play. It is without doubt all down to great team work.”
