Media Release: The Portes du Soleil – winter 2010

WINTER has arrived in the Portes du Soleil! Thanks to recent abundant snowfalls (80cm at the top, 30cm at resort level), five of our 12 resorts opened partly last weekend!

What’s happening in the Portes du Soleil this winter season:

The Portes du Soleil introduces a new activity: the ‘Taxi-ski’.

The Taxi-ski allows everyone, no matter what their age or fitness level, to go up the mountain and meet friends at a high-altitude restaurant, to reach the peaks for a stunning view, and to see the slopes at first hand.

Passengers simply sit in a chair that’s guided by an instructor who gets them to their meeting point – without putting on skis!

Prices start at 36€/hour. Reservation: ESF Châtel +33 450 73 22 64, info@esf-chatel.com and ESF Morzine +33 450 79 13 13, info@esf-morzine.com

Abondance reopens this winter! After a two-year interval, Abondance is all set to reopen its ski area this winter. As part of a public service initiative, nine lifts will open, giving access to 13 slopes for all levels in the Essert sector.

New learn-to-ski spaces. Avoriaz is trialling a new concept: starter courses for adult beginners. With four special zones that are totally safe and off-limits to other skiers, ski schools will be offering teaching that helps new skiers through the four learner phases while boosting improvement through targeted on-piste workshops. The course price includes ski lessons on the special zones with qualified instructors, specially selected equipment and a lift pass.

Event: The Portes du Soleil welcomes the 6th Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc international dog-sleigh race from 10th to 13th January 2010. The Portes du Soleil stage comprises 4 legs in which the huskies have to cross mountains, ski slopes and wild terrain.

For food lovers: 1st Michelin Star restaurant in the Portes du Soleil! The ‘C21 – Centre’ in Champéry has received a Star in the 2010 Michelin Guide. Chef Denis Martin, who has already got 2 Michelin Stars for his restaurant in Vevey (Switzerland), offers a 21st century cuisine with his molecular gastronomy. www.centrechampery.ch

The Portes du Soleil has invested in a brand new 360° high definition webcam on the Mossettes summit in the heart of the ski area.
