Media Release: LifeScan and HIE work together for future success

LIFESCAN Scotland’s work in the field of diabetes has drawn significant support from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) in the last 12 months.

With diabetes now one of the fastest growing medical conditions in the world, Inverness-based LifeScan Scotland is committed to leading the field in researching and developing new products for its customers.

Last year, HIE provided £1.5m assistance to two specific LifeScan projects reinforcing the region’s reputation as a key centre for innovation and expertise in diabetes diagnostic techniques.

“I would like to thank HIE for supporting our longer term projects,” said LifeScan managing director, Willie Printie.

“These grants will go towards the research and development of new products that will help improve the lives of our customers.”

In September, HIE approved a £313k research and development grant. It accompanied the Scottish Government’s £2m Regional Selective Assistance to support the manufacture of LifeScan’s new testing strip system.

In addition, HIE approved a further £1.2m award towards the development of a further longer-term product to be manufactured from the Inverness site.

HIE area manager, Martin Johnson, explained: “As well as retaining around 30 research and development (R & D) jobs within their workforce, these approvals are enabling the company to invest in next generation solutions and support LifeScan’s wider contribution to the region’s health science sector.

“LifeScan provides well paid employment and rewarding career paths for people and offers excellent opportunities to science graduates.”

HIE works with LifeScan Scotland as part of its account management programme.
