Media Release: Musselburgh plans given the go-ahead

PLANS for the state-of-the-art Musselburgh Primary Care Centre have taken a step forward with full planning permission granted by East Lothian Council.

The primary care centre will provide new accommodation for three GP practices and related healthcare services and clinics, including some currently provided at Edenhall Hospital such as podiatry, physiotherapy, community paediatric services, community dental services, speech and language therapy, clinical psychology school nurse teams and out-patient clinics.

Dr Charles Winstanley, chair, NHS Lothian, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have reached this stage which is a significant milestone in the development. This now paves the way for bringing excellent, modern, flexible and integrated healthcare services for the local and wider East Lothian community.”

Gerry Power, general manager, NHS Lothian, said: “This is welcome news which will bring wide ranging healthcare benefits for the local community. A great deal of work has been undertaken to reach this point including appointing the design team and engaging with the local community on what the new Musselburgh Primary Care Centre will look like.”

Cllr. Roger Knox, East Lothian Council’s Public Health spokesperson, said: “This approval will be much welcomed in Musselburgh where the local community have been looking forward to the new health provision for a number of years. The exact provision of the centre has been the subject of careful planning and negotiation over recent years and I am delighted that the new partnership of East Lothian Council and NHS Lothian has brought this beneficial development to fruition.”

We expect to start on site in the Spring and the estimated completion date is scheduled for 2011.
