Media Release: TUV NEL 2010 Americas Workshop to address changes in glow measurement practice

SCOTLAND-based TUV NEL, a leading provider of pipeline fluid management services to the global petroleum industry, is hosting its third Americas Workshop in The Woodlands, near Houston, from April 27 – 29, 2010 to address the challenges in flow measurement practice affecting the North, South and Central America.

Building on the success of the previous two events, the 2010 workshop is being held in association with the UK’s National Measurement System and will examine the relevant issues related to complex fluids, measurement technologies, allocation and verification.

“Since its launch two years ago, the Americas Workshop has been established as one of the major forums in the continent to facilitate such sharing of knowledge within a focused environment,” said Jim Holt, TUV NEL’s international business development manager.

“The 2010 event is specially targeted at metering and instrumentation engineers, production and reservoir engineers, hydrocarbon accountants, metering system vendors, product suppliers, government regulators and researchers, who will come together to study the various flow measurement challenges faced by the oil and gas industry now and in the future.”

TUV NEL’s workshops are unique in that there are no other events dedicated to such wide-ranging flow measurement topics within the oil and gas sector, which is a critical issue for operators and regulators around the globe.

The previous two events were highly successful and attracted positive feedback from over 100 industry experts who attended each of the workshops. The 2010 workshop will further draw on TUV NEL’s proven track record of similar workshops for the North Sea and South East Asian markets.”

There will be technical presentations and papers selected by a panel of industry experts from BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Fluor Offshore Solutions, Letton-Hall Group, TOTAL E&P USA and Weatherford. Developments in technology, new regulation and best practices in the dynamic and economically challenging world of oil and gas production will be shared among the practitioners operating within upstream production and measurement.

According to Tyler Priest, University of Houston, who will be delivering the keynote speech at the event: “One of the most remarkable stories in the history of the oil business has been the march of innovation into ever deeper waters and new geological environments offshore.

“The talk will examine how the industry’s knowledge evolved, focusing on some of the major milestones that launched the industry from 300 feet of water in 1970 to 10,000 foot depths today,” said Tyler.

To make this year’s event a bigger success, TUV NEL is hosting two other training courses to complement the Americas Workshop – a Measurement Uncertainty training course, which will be held on 26 April 2010 and a training session on Solving Flow Metering Problems using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) on 30 April 2010.

The former course is designed to impart an understanding of the impact of measurement uncertainty on the oil and gas industry, while the latter will address how to solve flow metering problems using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The course is particularly intended for metering engineers working on the oil and gas facilities as it aims to answer questions related to CFD and how it applies to flow metering in the oil and gas sector.
