Media Release: The power of theatre – ScottishPower supports three arts education projects

THE National Theatre of Scotland, in partnership with ScottishPower, is delighted to announce the launch of three major, community and education projects.

These new unique productions involving members of the community will be led by the National Theatre of Scotland, sponsored by ScottishPower and be provided with additional support from the Scottish Government.

The first project – 99…100 – will involve a number of primary and secondary schools in a combination of music, movement, drama, puppetry, art and design.

The production will feature local stories gathered from the Fife community during the project which takes place throughout 2010. Three weeks of public performances in November sees the culmination of the project, where it will be presented as part of Celebrating Fife 2010.

The second project is due to take place in communities in Glasgow during 2010 and 2011. It will look at how young people respond to the rules set for them by the adult world. Details of the third project will be announced at a later date.

These initiatives follow on from the success of Transform – a major collaborative education project led by the National Theatre of Scotland and sponsored by ScottishPower.

Ten Transform projects enabled schools and communities across Scotland to literally transform their approaches to learning through theatre.

Vicky Featherstone, artistic director at the National Theatre of Scotland, said:

“Over the last few years, the partnership between the National Theatre of Scotland and ScottishPower has supported the creation of ten Transform projects across Scotland.

“We value highly this unique relationship with ScottishPower and we are absolutely delighted that that they have agreed to  continue their support though the sponsorship of these large-scale community  projects, offering us the opportunity to further grow this exciting and dynamic partnership and to change people’s lives through theatre.”

Heather McDonald, group sponsorships manager at ScottishPower, said:

“Following on from the phenomenal success of Transform, ScottishPower is delighted to support three new National Theatre of Scotland projects.

“We are looking forward to supporting the three initiatives and very interested to see the results of such an innovative project which draws on actual experiences of young people.

“At ScottishPower we believe that culture and art should be accessible for all.  We have a long tradition of supporting the arts in the UK and are pleased to be able to contribute to this interesting and beneficial part of society.”
