Media Release: What is Curriculum for Excellence? Learning Festival to explain

EDINBURGH’S inaugural Learning Festival will give parents the opportunity to see Curriculum for Excellence in action next Saturday (29th May).

An education village at the jargon free festival will showcase the very best of the new curriculum by demonstrating how it is being delivered across the city.

All of the city’s schools will be represented and pupils and teachers will present examples of the curriculum in action for parents to experience for themselves.

The festival will also look at how the new curriculum is developing at national and at local levels and at how it is being used to revolutionise the teaching of literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing across the subjects.

City education leader, Cllr Marilyne MacLaren, will speak at the festival and Edinburgh pupils will tell visitors what Curriculum for Excellence means to them.

Cllr MacLaren said: “Curriculum for Excellence has been a seismic shift in the way schools deliver learning and teaching and Edinburgh is at the forefront of driving it forward. Our schools are already embracing the principals of the new curriculum and I am confident that we are making rapid progress.

“It is vitally important that everyone with a stake in this most important but complex of projects – parents, pupils teachers and staff – are clear about what it means and are bought into the benefits. This unique festival will tell the story of Curriculum for Excellence, it will explain exactly what it is and how it is making a difference to the education of young people in Edinburgh.”

The Festival of Learning takes place on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th of May at the Edinburgh Hilton Grosvenor. Friday is aimed at educationalists and lead officials and Saturday is focussed for parents.
