Media Release: 100 years young – special party for Nell

A LOCAL Day Care Centre and Carers’ Centre will be helping a Glasgow woman celebrate a very special birthday today (Thursday 9 September 2010).

The Dixon Community is marking Helen (Nell) Ribi’s 100th birthday with a party at The Princess Royal Trust Glasgow South East Carers Centre. The centenary celebration will welcome along 100 friends and supporters to join Nell in blowing out the candles on her cake.

Nell attends daycare at The Dixon Community Day Care Centre three days a week.

At her home in Myrtle Park, Glasgow, she is cared for by her brother Alex Freer, 85, as she is frail and partially sighted. Nell puts the secret of her long life down to “good food and clean living”.

For the last 18 months, Glasgow South East Carers Centre has worked closely with health and social care services to identify carers and make sure their own health is not being badly affected by caring.

Says a spokesperson: “Alex was identified as a result of this work – the project is called The Princess Royal Trust for Carers Moffat Programme – while his sister was in hospital. The result was that Nell now attends daycare services at the Dixon Community.”

Glasgow South East Carers Centre supports carers in many different ways. It provides information for carers, whatever their different circumstances, and makes sure carers’ voices are heard by local decision makers.

The centre also finds hidden carers through work with GP surgeries, hospital wards and schools, supports carers emotionally and helps to make caring a positive experience.
