Media Release: Glasgow develops innovative, new CPD and LLM in Contemporary Law and Practice

IN what is believed to be a first for Scotland, an innovative new CPD* and LLM** in Contemporary Law and Practice Programme has been developed by the University of Glasgow.

Designed not only for legal practitioners and recent graduates with an interest in areas of law in practice but also for other related professions including social work, police and medicine, the flexible new programme aims to appeal to a broad range of students and professionals.

Clare Connelly, senior lecturer in the School of Law who developed the course with Dr Jane Mair said: “The Glasgow University Law School CPD and LLM in Contemporary Law and Practice Programme provides a dynamic learning experience to professionals working with contemporary law.

“Our flexible mode of delivery recognises the time pressures professionals face and allows them to achieve their personal development goals whilst meeting their professional obligations.

“Delivered by leading practitioners and academics, practitioners will be credited for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) purposes whilst at the same time bank credits towards a post-graduate qualification.”

This new programme aims to reflect contemporary issues and make courses as flexible as possible for students.

A range of elective courses, from employment law, human rights law, criminal law, family law and public law, are available enabling professionals to specialise in the particular areas of legal practice most relevant to their work.

Tailored to meet the needs of part time study, courses will be taught on the basis of short, intensive ‘conference’ style sessions, incorporating a range of teaching methods and students can choose to complete the course to Certificate, Diploma or LLM level.

Reflecting the focus of the programme on law in practice, the courses will be delivered by teams of academics and practitioners and assessment will be completed within ten weeks of teaching. In addition, courses will ‘double count’ for CPD credits with a range of professional bodies.

The new CPD and LLM in Contemporary law and Practice Programme, which starts in January 2011, follows the considerable success of similarly structured professional Masters degrees offered with by University of Glasgow’s Department of Urban Studies.
