A WELL-known Edinburgh businessperson and respected business consultant, Ben Cartwright, have joined forces to to form UNIQ – The Academy for Entrepreneurs, to offer operational, marketing and sales advice to new and small firms throughout the country.
Begins a spokesperson: “Ruth McKayis convinced a high percentage of start-ups will quickly fail if they are not sufficiently equipped or experienced enough.”
Ms McKay, the vice-chair of the Edinburgh branch of the Federation of Small Businesses, said: “I can guarantee that as soon as many politicians realise there’s a massive upswing in start-up rates, they’ll start trying to take the credit. They should hold their tongue, because countless of these new businesses will fail.
“We are extremely worried for many of the hundreds of thousands of people expected to become their own boss in the next 12 months. A lot of them will have been made redundant and I’m sure most will be excellent at their own speciality, but not many will have day-to-day experience of running a business.
“Yet with unemployment as it is, many folk thrown out of work feel they have no option but to try to make a go of it on their own. I feel for them and we at UNIQ will try to help them.”
Ms McKay said she was particularly concerned because she felt the UK Government’s start-up help agency, Business Gateway, often failed to give the sort of intensive service many new companies needed.
She said: “Business Gateway does its best but it doesn’t offer the personal and customised service we offer. Besides, if current predictions are right, Business Gateway is going to be swamped with new clients. I seriously doubt if any public-sector organisation is nimble enough to deal with that. We at UNIQ are, however.”
